SEO of an online shop on your own

In one of our previous articles, we looked at tools for attracting customers, which can be used by new entrepreneurs. Today we talked to Step Link specialists about how you can optimise your online shop's website for search engines on your own. This process is called SEO - a set of measures to increase the visibility of the site in search engines for targeted queries. The higher your online shop will be in the search results, the more customers will come to you.

We have compiled step-by-step instructions on how to promote your website on your own.

Target Queries

Decide on which words and phrases you would like to see each page of your website in the search engine results. The list of queries will be called the semantic core of your online shop. Queries can not just compose, but also take from existing bases, as well as focus on competitors. Do not work immediately with all pages of the site. Start with 10 pages that, in your opinion, are the most important. Gradually you will optimise all pages.

Title Tags

Title or page title is one of the most important ranking factors. If you decide to promote the site yourself, it is a very important stage of work. Title must be competently prescribed for each page that you want to promote. This is the text on the basis of which search pages extract several very important ranking factors. Search engine robots analyse it very carefully.

Every page on the website should have its own unique Title tag. It's like a fingerprint and a clue for search: how this page differs from another page on your site and other pages on the internet in general.

It's important that the Title contains all or most of the words from the queries that lead to that page. For example, ‘buy dog products in an online shop, pet shop dog products in...’.

If there are a lot of pages, it is necessary to use templates for the tag that would be suitable for most pages of this type (categories, product cards). It is required to create certain rules by which the tag will be formed.

Commercial factors

These are the metrics of a website that a search engine evaluates to determine the quality of the business behind it.

The most important factors are:

  • The assortment in product categories should be wider than the competitors, or at least not inferior to it.

  • Convenient ways of ordering goods and communication: shopping basket, chat, mail, ‘buy in 1 click’, etc.

  • Full information about the company: a unique selling proposition, details, as well as faces of the company, because people trust people.

  • Convenient catalogue navigation: give the visitor the opportunity to easily and quickly find the necessary goods.

  • Contact page: phone numbers, address, driving directions, etc.

  • Information about delivery and payment methods, as well as guarantees. In about 50% of cases, users who have already put a product in the basket do not place an order because they are not satisfied with or cannot understand the delivery conditions.

Check your site for errors

Add the site and check for critical errors in webmaster panels (e.g. https://search.google.com/search-console).

You need to make sure that:

  • the site is not subject to filters or sanctions;

  • there are no viruses on the site;

  • the site is successfully scanned by search robots;

  • the number of pages indexed by the search engine should be equal to the number of pages on the site.

Refine the structure of the online shop

Create and optimise new pages that will satisfy search demand: subcategories, product cards, articles, etc. By analysing the sales and needs of your target audience, you can identify the narrower interests of your customers and create categories and pages for them, where they will find solutions to their problems.

Remember, there is no magic ‘get to the top’ button in SEO. A systematic approach and cyclicality plays a key role in promotion. Track the results and evaluate the quality of work performed. If you can not improve the performance of the site on your own, then you should engage a specialist.
